What People Say

Most Liked

The food quality at TACOS EL JEFE consistently receives rave reviews. The carnitas are particularly a hit, praised for their tender, flavorful profiles. Patrons love the assortment of tacos, especially the steak and birria options, often noting the perfect balance of toppings like onions, cilantro, and house-made salsas that complement every bite perfectly.

Another favorite is the pozole, often described as a go-to cure for hangovers. The staff is attentive and friendly, making it a welcoming place for families. The clean and contemporary environment enhances the dining experience, giving it a fresh feel. With options for solo dining, it's an easy choice to pop in for a quick and satisfying meal.

Most Disliked

While TACOS EL JEFE shines in many areas, some patrons mention limited menu options, which can occasionally feel restrictive. Though the greatness of what's offered raises expectations, some would appreciate additional variety in choices. A few reviews highlight that the soda options are limited to cans or bottles, which isn't always ideal for guests who prefer fresh beverages.

Pricing has been noted as slightly above average, especially for those accustomed to lower-priced taco spots. Though the food quality justifies the prices for many, it might deter budget-conscious diners. Occasionally, seating may become tight during peak hours, particularly on Wednesdays. A few visitors express a desire for quicker turnover in seating during busier times.

Im a gringo as a gringo can get but I always feel at home at El Jefe. The staff is friendly and fast. The pozole is AWSOME for a hang over and the biria tacos are fantastic. I frequent El Jefe at least 2-4 times a week and they never disappoint. The staff speaks English and are very courteous. The restaurant is clean and they have ample seating. If I could give 100 stars I would.

What a cute place! The best carnitas we’ve had since moving to Chicago a year ago. Limited menu but you can buy all their meats by the pound. Taco plate was great, beans savory and delicious! Rice was outstanding too. Tacos come with either onions and cilantro or lettuce and tomatoes. Staff is friendly and attentive. Two salsas came with our meal, one red and mild, the other green and spicy and really good. Soda was in cans or bottles and surprisingly no chips! Plenty of parking!

**Updated review 2-25-24** came in today to try the menudo and chicharron grueso/carnudo. Both are great, menudo nice and spicy. A little different from what we are used to but it was still so good. Came in to get some Barbacoa de Res to go. It has great taste and cooked perfectly. They have plenty of options and we will definitely be back to try the rest. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They were able to answer all the questions and they made recommendations. The restaurant is definitely up to date and they have a great selection of salsas!

No frills Mexican restaurant. Nice variety of food. My husband and I stopped in for lunch as we wanted to try this place since it opened recently. We shared a taco dinner and burrito. Everything was really good. The chicken had really nice flavor from the grill. Will definitely be back!
